The role
This role is within the Applied Software Group (ASG) at a16z, an internal team building software tools for the firm's investing and operations teams. The engineer will own and improve the internal developer platform, build shared tooling, and support observability and security. The position requires in-office presence 2-3 days a week in San Francisco and is open at two levels.

What you would do
- Improve the internal developer platform and associated applications
- Collaborate with colleagues to understand and support their use cases
- Build and maintain shared tooling, templates, and internal libraries
- Support observability, monitoring, and alerting for self-service issue resolution
- Collaborate with cybersecurity to ensure workflows meet security requirements
- Write and maintain developer documentation, onboarding guides, and runbooks
Must have
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Proficiency in Python 3, Rust, or similar backend languages
- Willingness to learn new technologies
- Track record of shipping developer platforms or internal tooling
- Experience improving engineering velocity with internal tools
- Excitement to work with diverse user groups
- Experience deploying services on a major cloud platform
- Experience with containerized services like Docker
- Exposure to CI/CD systems like GitHub Actions or CircleCI
- Experience with production SQL databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Experience in environments valuing rapid iteration and code quality
- Strong problem-solving skills and technical fundamentals
Nice to have
- Experience with Kubernetes
- NoSQL experience like Elasticsearch
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code like Terraform or Pulumi
