The role
This role is for a software engineer to join the Applied Software Group (ASG) at a16z, an internal team building software tools for the firm's investing and operations teams. The engineer will own and improve the internal developer platform, build shared tooling, and support observability and security. The role requires in-office presence 2-3 days a week in San Francisco.

What you would do
- Improve the internal developer platform and its applications
- Collaborate with colleagues to understand and support their use cases
- Build and maintain shared tooling, templates, and internal libraries
- Support observability, monitoring, and alerting for self-service issue resolution
- Collaborate with cybersecurity to ensure workflows meet security requirements
- Write and maintain developer documentation, onboarding guides, and runbooks
Must have
- 3+ years of professional software engineering experience
- Proficiency in Python 3, Rust, or similar backend languages
- Willingness to learn new technologies
- Track record of shipping developer platforms or internal tooling
- Experience improving engineering velocity with internal tools
- Excitement to work with diverse user groups
- Experience deploying services on GCP, AWS, or Azure
- Experience with containerized services using Docker
- Exposure to CI/CD systems like GitHub Actions or CircleCI
- Experience with production SQL databases like PostgreSQL or MySQL
- Experience in environments valuing rapid iteration and code quality
- Strong problem-solving skills and technical fundamentals
Nice to have
- Experience with Kubernetes
- NoSQL experience such as Elasticsearch
- Experience with infrastructure-as-code like Terraform or Pulumi
