Strong and precise in the fields that own it, and inflated everywhere else. In finance, security and compliance an audit is a defined procedure with an output somebody signs; used loosely for "looked through the spreadsheet" it borrows that authority without the procedure. The other failure is stopping at the audit: a finding nobody acted on is a document, and the verb has no room for what happened next.
